[2014 Film Roundup]

Total: 204 (full list here)
…plus 8 other (NT Live, etc)
Revival: 70
SIFF: 51
Other festivals (SLGFF, Noir City): 21
Free: SIFF volunteer (67 + festival), other machinations (29)
…all told I paid $376.95 in total for movies in 2014, not including Veronica Mars, giving us an average ticket price of $1.85.

Favorite films (which this year means films which haunted me the most): Ida, Force Majeure, and Foxcatcher

Honorable mention: the Tilda Swinton Trilogy of The Grand Budapest Hotel, Only Lovers Left Alive, and Snowpiercer

And of course: Inherent Vice, Nightcrawler, Whiplash (the most efficiently directed film I’ve seen in ages), Obvious Child, The One I Love, Wild, Selma, We Are the Best, and For Those In Peril (speaking of haunting omg that lead performance)

Favorite popcorn movies: Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Maleficent, Mockingjay Part 1

Under the radar recommendations: Rhymes for Young Ghouls, Le Week-End, Go For Sisters, Borgman, Kumiko the Treasure Hunter, The Lunchbox, The Babadook, The Strange Little Cat, Locke, Starred Up, and Belle

Local movies I dug: My Last Year with the Nuns, Laggies, Lucky Them

Favorite illegal film: Final Cut Ladies and Gentlemen

Favorite queer films: Love Is Strange, Pride, The Skeleton Twins, Lilting, The Way He Looks

Favorite documentaries: Life Itself, Tim’s Vermeer, Finding Vivian Maier, Jodorowsky’s Dune, Stray Dog, Rich Hill, The Dog

Favorite found footage film: Creep

Favorite campy horror films: Grand Piano, The Guest

Favorite musicals: God Help the Girl, Begin Again

Favorite revival experiences: Silent Movie Mondays *finally*, The Magnificent Andersons series (Wes Tuesdays, Paul Thomas Wednesdays), A Hard Day’s Night, Hiroshima Mon Amour, and the Egyptian reopening Secret Movie. Oh, and Samurai Cop, of course.

Objectively the best film for gazing adoringly at Oscar Isaac’s perfect face: The Two Faces of January

Films I hated, so fair warning: Hector and the Search for Happiness, Winter’s Tale (it’s perhaps instructive to know that since seeing the film I’ve read the book. Twice), Million Dollar Arm, Words and Pictures

Still to see: The Immigrant, Two Days One Night, A Most Violent Year, Leviathan, Night Moves, etc. Probably more I’m forgetting.

What did I miss? What titles would you like me to talk a little more about?
